Evolution Korea

South Korea’s democracy is susceptible to populist inclinations. However, it is more stable than one would expect.

The country is looking for an innovative development paradigm. A Confucian culture that values respect for the ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence the way we live. But there are signs that a secularist culture is gaining ground.

Origins

In the early days, the ancestors to modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans and other crops. They also raised livestock, and also made furs. These tribes formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established an industry of metallurgy, which produced iron tools and bronze. They traded with other states and introduced celadon, paper making, block printing art styles, and a written language to Japan.

Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. This state embraced Chinese culture, including Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. During this period the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure that included a monarch as well as high-ranking officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy, while the majority of the population was peasants. The state extracted taxes from these citizens and often required them to fight in the army or take part in projects of the government, like building fortifications.

By the end of this period, the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and was the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. This new kingdom expanded into the southwest of the peninsula, and clashed against the Goguryeo commanderies and China’s in the area. Baekje included elements of Confucian thinking into its state beliefs and made the male-centric concept of filiopiety an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Under the guise of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families and they must be respected and obeyed by all people, even their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, a nation which ruled from 918 until 1392 CE, gave the world the Hangul Alphabet based upon the shapes that were created by the mouth when it pronounces. This dramatically improved communication between people and led to an explosion in the writing of Buddhist texts. Additionally, movable metallic type printing was introduced and woodblock printing was improved. It was during this time that the Samguk sagi, also known as ‘History of the Three Kingdoms’ was first written in 1145 CE.

Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times to. Early evidence of human settlements can be seen in the form of graves paved with stone, with precious items such as amazonite jewelry buried with the dead. Megalithic structures, referred to as dolmens and built of single large stones, are prevalent throughout the country.

In the first second half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognisable political state. The peninsula was ruled by various states during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCbetween 635 and 57 BC CE) including Baekje Goguryeo and Silla. The northern region of the peninsula was for a while occupied by the Balhae Kingdom which historians do not believe to be a true Korean state.

Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje, the most powerful of these states was diminished by the Goguryeo’s fall (676 CE) leaving only its southern territories in Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, prospered for a while.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged, and the three kingdoms began to collaborate in order to expand their territorial holdings. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters the post-crisis period the development paradigm of the country is in flux. People who are shocked by the cost of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital, labor and markets for products. On the other hand those who support the old system want to protect it by using nationalist sentiments and inflating fears about job losses.

Academics and analysts are divided about the extent to which Korea’s development is being driven by these two trends. This article assesses the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea’s political evolution including democratic illiberalism (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also identifies significant factors that may influence these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views to this population. A 2009 survey found that nearly one third of respondents do not believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs. 17 percent said they did not understand it. This level of doubt is similar to that in the United States, where a similar number of people do not accept that humans evolved from earlier forms of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on teaching college students and in bringing them to Christ. A significant rise in interest in creation science came in the year 1980, when there was the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the main speakers. This event was attended by an impressive crowd of professors, scientists, and church leaders.

The success of this event resulted in the creation of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31, 1981. The inaugural meeting was widely reported in national newspapers, such as The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, where it reported on its activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR and several books on creationism that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures in universities and churches across the country.

One example of a KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, students were so fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised enough money and support to put up an on-campus museum showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also organized a network of local branches that hold seminars and present talks to school children and other community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other style elements from overseas. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by contemporary jazz and rock and roll. At this time, the famous samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, became popular with the public. These dramatic pieces were performed with the accompaniment of shaman drums as well as various musical instruments.

The economic crisis has shaped Korea’s new development paradigm. The main challenge for the new regime is to strike the right balance between state-led and market-oriented economic policies. It also requires altering incentives, monitoring, or discipline schemes that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 & 4.

Founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas and immigrants from northern China. Baekje, a major regional power in the early 4th century expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries resulted in the rise of powerful local factions. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital and exerted control over part of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

However the rule of his was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the central government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was then under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula as well as in Manchuria.
